Louisville homeless population hits record levels
A new study reveals that the homeless population in Louisville has skyrocketed to record high levels. But that's only one disturbing trend outlined in the report.
11,000 people stayed in 27 homeless shelters in the Louisville area during 2007. That's a 3% increase from the previous year. But what is even more alarming is the number of homeless children -- a 58% increase.
The report comes just as human service programs to help the homeless are facing cuts. Because of the city's own tight budget, the Volunteers of America shelter may not be getting $42,000 to help pay for overnight staffing.
