Clark County Police search for unregistered sex offenders

Clark County Police say several dozen sex offenders are not where they should be.  A task force with the Clark County Sheriff's Department is knocking on doors trying to find at least 42 sex offenders who have not registered.

Officer Tim Franklin is part of the Clark County Sex Offender Task Force:  "All I do is these home visits and keep track of these individuals."

Wednesday, Officer Franklin was looking for Sanford Walker, Jr., a sex offender who has not registered.  There was no answer at Walker's home on Webster Drive in Jeffersonville.  And that concerns some of his neighbors like Marlene Callahan:  "That's kind of's a little easier when you know the situation and you know what to look out for."

Sanford Walker, Jr. is one of more than 40 sex offenders the task force is looking for.  Lt. Randy Burton explains, "The majority of the offenders on our list are child molesters, but the sexual violent predators that we do have are rapists."

And Officer Franklin says, "It's important that we know where everybody is all the time just to keep the public safe."

At least one sex offender turned himself in this week, but police want to find the others because, as Officer Franklin says, "There's always that chance that somebody else could become a victim to their crime."  And that's why Officer Franklin will continue knocking on doors until everyone is accounted for.  "We'll keep going until we find 'em all."

That gives neighbors like Marlene Callahan peace of mind.  "It would be really, you know, easier to sleep at night."

This is an ongoing effort, so task force members will be knocking on doors until all of the sex offenders are accounted for.

If you have any information about the whereabouts of one of the sex offenders, you can call the anonymous tip line -- that number is 502-280-CCSO.
