Teachers question legality of dismissal

Jefferson County's teachers union wonders if the non renewal of 36 teachers' contracts constitutes racial discrimination.

Superintendent Sheldon Berman has said he did not renew many of those contracts based on the teachers' performance on the job.

Those teachers are not tenured.  And half of the 36 are black.  The school district disputes those numbers, saying they are much smaller.

The teachers say they did not get performance reviews nor were offered the chance to improve in violation of their contract.

Fourteen percent of Jefferson County public school teachers are black.  Eighteen of those non renewed teachers have filed a lawsuit asking for their jobs back.

The teachers union will take the issue before the school board Monday night.
