Salvation Army marks 125th anniversary in Louisville

The Salvation Army is marking its 125th anniversary in Louisville.  A celebration breakfast marked the occasion Wednesday morning.

The organization is moving its headquarters and its Center of Hope into Old Male High School.  The center will focus on helping the area's poor and homeless by giving them a place to live and get job training.

Dr. Judy Green of the Louisville Metro Council points out that some people say the poor and homeless should pull themselves up by their bootstraps, but some people don't have boots.  She thinks of the Salvation Army as giving people a hand up, not a handout.

The Salvation Army is also building an $18 million Kroc Community Center on Cane Run Road.   The new center will have educational and wellness centers, sports fields, and a swimming pool.
