Courier-Journal columnist Bob Hill, in an announcement on the paper's website, says he is retiring.

Hill says his retirement is effective August 2nd.  He says after a 40-year career, 33 years of that spent in Louisville, and over 4,000 columns, "at some point you just know it's time to go."

Hill says his "best and happiest" hours are now spent at Hidden Hill Nursery & Sculpture Garden, which he and his wife Janet created.

He also says his wife's recent diagnosis with breast cancer, changes in the newspaper business, and a desire to travel played a role in his decision.
