One year anniversary of little boy's disappearance

A year ago Sunday, four-year-old Ivan Aguilar-Cano of Louisville was reported missing. This was the beginning of an ordeal that has yet to end. It's the tragic murder of a child, we will all remember.

It is a picture we saw early last summer, and most of us never forgot it, four-year-old Ivan Aguilar-Cano.  Just after three o'clock, on June 29th a year ago, his mother reported him missing.  He was last seen outside his apartment on Oakdale avenue, across from Churchill Downs.

The search for Cano, at times was overwhelming. It seemed the entire city had an interest in this little boy. Police searched door to door, neighbors came out in full force, and flyers were posted on almost every street corner.

A little over a week after the disappearance, a boy's body is found in a waste management garbage truck and later positively identified as that of Cano. The case is quickly classified a homicide.

Cano was buried in August, In his mother's hometown, in Guatemala. After a tedious investigation, Metro Police say evidence led them to the 3100 block of South Third Street in Louisville, an apartment building behind the Oakdale apartments where the Cano family lives.

With the help of cadaver dogs, police narrowed down the suspects.  They say all along they had a person of interest in the case, Cecil New II.  New was questioned by police, just five days after cano disappeared.

Rosa Cano, Ivan's mother says, "Whoever killed her son, should receive the death penalty.  What they did to him, that's not right." Police searched Cecil News apartment and collected evidence.

For most of the summer, his name was well known, even though he hadn't been charged.  A court clerk accidentally released a search warrant for his apartment.

In early december, police arrested convicted sex offender, cecil new. He's charged with murder, kidnapping, tampering with physical evidence and unlawful transaction with a minor.

Cecil new the second has been on the Kentucky sex offender registry since March 2000. He was convicted of sodomy involving 9 and 11-year old victims.
