Ford, Toyota report double-digit sales drop for June

Ford Motor Company and Toyota are reporting a sales drop in June in double digits. Ford says its U.S. sales tumbled 28% in June, Toyota's are down 21%.

A weak economy and high gas prices are being pointed to as the culprits.

Ford pointed out Tuesday that one survey shows more than 50% of the consumers say this is a bad time to buy a vehicle. On the flip side, a Ford survey shows Americans saved at a decade high rate of 5% in June.

Ford sold 33,000 Focus cars in May, but only 18,000 in June because of tight supplies. In the long term, Ford says the Focus is the best-selling domestic car in the U.S., and the company will produce 245,000 this year, 280,000 next year.

As for pickup truck and SUV sales, as expected, Ford says sales continue to fall sharply. The company says the car buyer wants four-cylinder engines, and Ford is not looking for truck and SUV sales to rebound.
