Some people receiving help for home improvements

Making home improvements can be costly and difficult.  Some residents are getting help.

It's a serious problem for some people who could be cited for problems with their homes, but they can't afford to fix them.  But now help is on the way.

Sarah Freeman moved into the Broadmoor section of Newburg more than forty years ago.  "My windows are so old," she says, "I can't even get 'em up."

Back then her home was fairly new.  "When I first got it, it was in perfect shape."  But over the years the home has aged and needs lots of work.  "I need my porch fixed, I need windows, furnace."

The home improvement work has been on hold because Freeman is on a fixed income:  "I'm a widow, I live alone, and I retired."

But without the work, Metro Councilwoman Barabara Shanklin says, "There are a lot of people that may have code violations for gutters hanging off."

Freeman and dozens of other neighbors who need home repairs face code violations.  Shanklin says they include, "external problems with their home that they could get cited for."

But now there's help on the way for people who need home repairs despite being on a fixed income.  Shanklin says it will, "help a lot of seniors and people who can't afford to get this work done."

Shanklin says Newburg recently received $620,000 in federal grant money to help low-income families make home repairs.  "It's going to be for ones that have not had help before, and be able to get emergency help if they need a furnace or something like that."

Freeman respondes, "It would help me a lot."  She hasn't even applied for help, but she's already getting excited about what could be:  "A new roof, a new porch."

Shanklin will be at the police substation on Unseld Boulevard in Newburg with her staff on Wednesdays and Fridays until the money runs out.  They'll start accepting the first application on July 11th.
