Only on Fox: U of L housing under construction at old American Standard plant

An abandonded factory property in a blighted neighborhood is showing signs of life.  Work is under way to build U of L student housing on the old American Standard plant on South Seventh Street.

When you're at the American Standard property it seems far removed from U of L, but it really isn't.  The southeast corner of the property is actually at the edge of campus.

Edwards Communities, an Ohio company that develops student housing, is knocking down buildings and tearing up asphalt.  It owns the rear 42 acres of the property and is busy wiping out its industrial past.

In January, Edwards Communities unveiled its plan to turn the former factory into an upscale student apartment community with landscaped courtyards, clubhouses, and swimming pools.

Residents of Davies Avenue, a street on the south side of the factory, are having to adjust to dust and noise as the site is cleared.  But since American Standard closed in 1972, their neighborhood has steadily declined.  So they see the development as a good thing.

Roy Simpson, a Davies Avenue resident, says, "It's coming along pretty good, and I believe it would benefit the neighborhood, as far as that goes."

Another student housing project is proposed next to the old factory building at the front of the property.  In a few years, up to two thousand students could be living in this area, attracting restaurants, sports bars, and shops to serve them.

Edwards Communities plans to have the first phase -- buildings containing 318 units finished by fall of 2009.

It plans at least 100 more apartments if demand for U of L student housing continues to grow.
