"The Churchill Downs Hero Blood Drive" being held in the paddock pavilion

The American Red Cross and Churchill Downs have come together for the area's single largest summer blood drive.

"The Churchill Downs Hero Blood Drive" is being held inside the track's paddock pavilion.

The Red Cross tries to keep a three-day supply on hand at all times.  But right now it is operating on a one-and-a-half day supply, with several blood types under a one-day supply.

Donor Recruitment Supervisor Susan Benner explains, "O's are always needed, of course, because those are the universal donors.  We also need the negative types especially and really anything we can use because the ones that are more common we can use to make plasma to give to some of the patients so we can use every kind you've got."

The Red Cross hopes to get 650 pints of blood during the drive.   It runs until six o'clock Wednesday night, and from 11 to 6 on Thursday.
