New JCPS student assignment plan expected to be implemented

The final step in Jefferson County's new student assignment plan is expected to take place Mon day night.

The JCPS board is expected to implement the new plans during a meeting Monday night.

One of those plans would group elementary schools into six clusters.  Students can attend any school within their cluster, as long as there's room and the school meets diversity guidelines.

It comes after the U.S. Supreme Court ordered the district to stop using race as a major factor when assigning students to schools.

Members are also expected to approve the magnet school programs.  The changes would take place in the 2009-2010 school year.
