Apartment fire on Lawson Lane near Iroquois Park leaves several people homeless

A late-night apartment fire leaves several people homeless.  Firefighters were called to the scene on Lawson Lane  near Iroquois Park just before 10:30 Sunday night.

Heavy smoke was pouring from the building, and several residents were trying to get out.  One third floor resident credits a neighbor for helping her and her family get out safely.

Crissie Lafferty says, "The neighbor started ringing the doorbell.  She said that we needed to come and look, that there was smoke coming through her vents.  We went over there and it was just pouring, our vents are up at the top, and it was just pouring out."

Fire officials say the fire started in one of the basement apartments.  The basement level suffered heavy smoke damage, and the second and third levels suffered moderate damage.

No injuries were reported.  The cause of the fire is under investigation.
