Gov. Beshear encourages flex schedules among state employees
Governor Steve Beshear admits there isn't anything he can do to lower record high gas prices. But he has a couple of ideas to help state workers cope with gas costs.
55% of state employees who work in Frankfort live elsewhere. Many drive from Louisville each work day, and their commutes to and from work have gotten a lot more expensive as gas prices have skyrocketed.
In June, Wes Swarner and sixteen other employees of the state Government Services Center switched to a four-day work week. That means only four commutes a week to Frankfort.
Governor Steve Beshear was surprised to find only about 2% of state workers currently work flex schedules.
He's ordered his cabinet secretaries to determine how many of their employees could switch to four-day work weeks and how many are interested.
