Kentucky Air National Guardsmen receive disaster training in California

Kentucky Air National Guardsmen are getting training that could change the way the government responds to major disasters.

The airmen are in California to learn how to quickly and effectively respond to a disaster.

The Air National Guard is usually the first to bring equipment and make sure victims get help as soon as it arrives.  The goal is to learn from the mistakes made during Hurricane Katrina.

Air Guard Major Keven Thornberry says, "Most of those folks here, at least to some degree, were involved with the humanitarian relief that we supported with Hurricane Katrina, so we've seen firsthand the role that we would plan in that type of situation."

The Air National Guardsmen are scheduled to return to Kentucky on Friday.
