Councilman Doug Hawkins continues fight against explosives bunker

Councilman Doug Hawkins says he's come up with 100 good reasons why the city should not build an LMPD explosives bunker in his district.

He says there are other alternative sites suitable for the bunker.   Hawkins and the people he represents are in opposition to the explosives bunker being built.

Hawkins knows of 100 alternate sites.  On Tuesday, Hawkins came up with a new plan.  "Public works told us they did a two year exhaustive search and came up with 19 locations.  In two days, my constituents came up with over 100 locations that meet their criteria." Hawkins said.

The explosives bunker would be a place for the city to keep munitions, blasting caps, fireworks and other items collected by the police department.

The city want's the site near the Cardinal Hill Reservoir.  Hawkins says that could damage the city's water supply.

Hawkins had a binder full of alternate locations he says the city should consider for the bomb storage magazine.

He also blames Mayor Jerry Abramson for selecting the Cardinal Hill site.  Chris Poynter, with the Mayor's Office said, "We'll look at those and see if there are any viable alternatives there.  We looked for many months finding a site."

Hawkins responded, "Nowhere along the line have we gotten a straight answer and been told the truth about this operation.  It has been pushed through, it has been bum-rushed on to this community."

Hawkins says the issue could be revisited in early August.  He's confident an alternate site will be selected.
