Latest hand transplant recipient says he's ahead of goals

The latest hand transplant recipient is beating expectations.  Dave Armstrong says he's ahead of his doctors' and therapists' goals for him.

He is already moving his new fingers and looking forward to how his life is going to change with his new hand.

Armstrong received the transplant on July 12th and began therapy on Friday.  He says he has pain as a result of the surgery, but his doctors are managing it well.

He says he already has a sensation of holding something with his new hand -- he just can't identify what he is holding without looking.

The feeling in the hand will increase gradually over the next weeks and months.

Armstrong is already looking forward to the day that simple tasks for the rest of us become simple for him again -- things such as tying his shoes and buttoning his shirt, and playing with his son.

Armstrong spends about two hours a day in therapy and will do that for the next few months before going back home to California.

Doctors recently biopsied his new hand and found no sign of rejection.
