New Albany City Council to look at smoking ordinance

Another southern Indiana city is taking a step toward stamping out smoking.

The New Albany City Council Monday night will look over an ordinance that would eliminate smoking in all indoor public places.  It would make exceptions for private clubs and retail tobacco stores.

Those opposed to a ban say their businesses will lose money and eliminate options for smokers.  But supporters say employees need to be able to breathe clean air.

Business owner Sam Anderson says, "When you're a smoker, you choose where you want to eat and drink.  And when you can go 500 yards away from my store and you're a smoker, you're going to go there."

Monday night's meeting will be in the third floor assembly room of the City-County Building at 7:30.

The City Council could make a decision by the end of September.
