Americana Community Center unveils new rain garden

The Americana Community Center is doing its part to improve the health of our local waterways. Wednesday the center unveiled its new rain garden.

It's designed to soak up runoff from the roof of the gym.  The project reduces the amount of water that would have to be treated at the sewage treatment plant.

Garden Manager Will Pierzala explains, "What happens is instead of the water going directly from the roof into the sewer department storm drains, it gets diverted out into the garden, which, one, takes time before it gets back into the drain and, two, it soaks up a whole lot of that water before it goes back into the sewer where it can be a problem."

The project was built by students who use the center.  It took about eight weeks to complete.
