Madison, IN honors soldier killed in Iraq

Madison, Indiana is mourning the loss of a native son to the Iraq war.  Madison is a small town and lots of people say they have vivid memories of Jon Menke.  In high school, he was an athlete and in school plays, an outgoing personality that people say they will never forget.

Many Madison residents shared memories of Jon Menke as they lined Clifty Drive waiting for his return home.  Many businesses along the highway shut down so employees could pay their respects as the procession carrying Menke's body passed by.

"He's laughing right now. Just the commotion he's causing.  I'm sure he's really, really happy, like, it's nice to see everybody come out," Michael Armstrong, Jon Menke's friend.

Armstrong says Menke didn't complain when his Indiana National Guard unit was activated last winter and his e-mail's from Iraq were upbeat as he planned a fall trip home.

Menke died August fourth when an overpass was bombed as his vehicle drove under it in East Baghdad.  An Indianapolis M.P. was also killed in the blast.

"It makes you realize what these children are doing for us. They are giving us our liberty and our freedom by protecting us and we're very grateful," said Debbie Armstrong, a Madison resident.

Much of the community will gather Wednesday at the high school gym for visitation and for a funeral with full honors on Thursday.
