LMPD dive team searching for plane that crashed over 30 years ago

The Louisville Metro Police Dive Team is trying to unravel a 30-year-old mystery in the Ohio River.

Officers are looking to the past to help them in the future.  The river is relatively calm this time of year -- perfect for the dive team to conduct an underwater search.

20 members of the Louisville Police dive team headed out to the Ohio River Wednesday to test new equipment they had just purchased.

In February of 1977, when the river was frozen, a pilot and his small plane flew into power lines over the river near Zorn Avenue.

The pilot, 52-year-old Roland Bellingham, and his plane were never found.  31 years later if police find anything, it would probably be just an engine block.

This time of year, river conditions are at their best for an underwater search. Even if nothing is found, the dive team believes the training here is time well-spent.

The members of the dive team don't get much experience in the river channel, because most of their rescue work is along the shore where the river is shallow.
