Kentucky State Fair opens in Louisville

The Kentucky state fair gets underway Thursday for 11 days of fun.

The fair will kick off with the annual Kentucky Commodity Breakfast.

Governor Steve Beshear, Louisville Mayor Jerry Abramson, the Commissioner of Agriculture and other state leaders will gather at the breakfast and celebrate the the opening of the State Fair.

This year's Kentucky State Fair opens at 7 am.

The Thrillway opens at 2 pm.

Before the rides open, state inspectors will finish checking the traveling carnival rides at the Midway to make sure they're safe.

The Department of Agriculture says they would like to spot check rides at Kentucky Kingdom more than just the current once a year.

Chad Halsey with the Department of Agriculture says, "In a perfect world, I mean, yes, we'd like to check every ride once it gets set up every time. With our manpower, we just cannot do that."

The General Assembly took nearly $3 million away from the Agriculture Department this year.

So the department says it's unlikely they'll hire more ride inspectors.

Admission for the fair is $8 for adults, $4 for children, and $4 for seniors.
