Project Women changing its name, moving into new home

A fast-growing Louisville organization is changing its name and preparing to move into a new $13 million home.  But it hasn't changed its mission -- giving single parents and their children a second chance at an education and a better life.

Project Women offers single women with children the financial help and moral support to go back to school.  Now that it's also accepting single men with children, Project Women has become Family Scholar House.

In Old Louisville, workers are scrambling to finish up a big construction project.  Shamika Adams and other Family Scholar House participants are anxious to move.  Adams says, "I've never had anything new since I've been an adult.  My kids have never experienced that."

Despite its cramped quarters, Family Scholar House provides financial assistance, counseling, housing, and day care to help more than two dozen single women with children go back to college.

Director Cathe Dykstra explains, "What we needed was a bigger campus.  But what we also needed was the addition of child care."

Next week, Shamika and her three children will move into a large three-bedroom apartment in the $13 million Family Scholar House complex -- 56 family-sized apartments, adult learning space, and a large child care, early learning building.

The complex will allow Scholar House to serve more single parents, including men with children, and Director Cathe Dykstra says having everyone together is important:  "When people are spread out, people lose that sense of community that they have when all of their neighbors are working toward the same goals -- everybody's in college, everybody's raising their kids."

The new facility makes Shamika Adams more determined than ever to finish her nursing degree.  "We are going to have something like this one day, except it's going to be mine. it's going to be ours, me and my kids."
