Politics and country ham at state fair breakfast

Gov. Steve Beshear says Kentucky's agricultural industry can evolve to offer solutions for rising energy costs.

Beshear and other elected officials rose early Thursday morning to attend the annual country ham breakfast at the state fair.

Beshear says Kentucky's farmers could provide not only food, but also "fiber and fuels."

Sen. Mitch McConnell attended and touted the need for more domestic drilling to increase the supply of oil. McConnell also advocated conservation of energy, electric cars and new technology that transfers coal to liquid fuel.

McConnell's Democratic opponent, Bruce Lunsford, said McConnell should have seen the energy problem coming long ago, and America is paying the price for that.

The ham breakfast is sponsored by the Kentucky Farm Bureau. The champion ham fetched $200,000 from the winning bidder, Republic Bank.
