Two KY Department of Highway officials resign

A Kentucky Transportation engineer and one of his aides resign after questions are raised about a potential conflict of interest.

Transportation Secretary Joe Prather announced State Highway Engineer Gilbert Newman and his aide Bill Gulick are leaving their positions.

The two men resigned after questions were raised by an internal auditor over a widening project in Franklin County.

The audit revealed Newman participated in discussions and decisions regarding the widening project. Gulick signed off on the project and had discussions with the project's designer, WMB, Inc. Gulick was once employed by WMB. That led to the potential conflict of interest.

Prather's chief of staff, Mike Hancock will serve as interim State Highway Engineer until a permanent replacement is named.
