JCPS looks for answers after death of 15-year-old football player

The Jefferson County School District is looking for answers, following the death of a 15-year-old football player.

An unfortunate situation is how the school district describes Max Gilpin's death.  Now the school administration is reviewing every aspect of the incident.

School district spokeswoman Lauren Roberts says, "It's something that's so unfortunate and we just don't have an answer for why this happened."

15-year-old Max Gilpin, a young man in good health, and used to the rigors of football practice, collapsed after running sprints.  At the school Monday, grief counselors helped students and staff cope, and there were private sessions for members of the football team.

While that was going on, the school district probe was in full gear.  Roberts says, "Our district athletic director will be meeting today, to collect formal statements and additional documentation, and then that report will be provided and passed on to the district level."

The coroner says the probably cause of death was complications from heat stroke.  But an autopsy won't be performed and would likely have not turned up a certain cause of death.

Gilpin had trouble breathing after the practice in 94-degree weather, and collapsed.

His body temperature was 107.

Sunday, hundreds of people gathered at the school for a private vigil, may asking how and why this could have happened.

Roberts says, "We have continually reviewed the situation last week -- the coaches, the athletic director, the principal, and we're going to review it again today.  But everything we continue to see indicates that all the protocol were followed, all of the guidelines were followed that are set out by the Kentucky High School Athletic Association."

Visitation will be Monday and Tuesday at the Owen Funeral Home on Dixie Highway and at the Valley View Church on Wednesday.

The funeral is Wednesday at the Valley View Church.

As for the school administration investigation, no timetable has been set.
