Man attacks neighbor, leaves her for dead
Kentucky State Police detectives continue to piece together a case of one neighbor attacking another and leaving her for dead. It happened in a usually peaceful Breckinridge County neighborhood that runs along the Rough River.
The woman remains in University of Louisville Hospital fighting for her life, after she's assaulted, raped and stabbed several times in a home on Meadowview Lane.
"She didn't deserve this and this is just a sad day that this has happened. She was a really good person, and she didn't deserve this," said Jenny Salmon, a neighbor.
The woman who is at University Hospital in Louisville. Police detectives say was attacked by her neighbor, 58-year-old Ernest Pine.
"Pine unlawfully entered her house, raped and sodomized her. He took some type of weapon, a sharp instrument a knife or razor blade. She had several lacerations. Mr. Pine thought she was dead," said Steve Pavey, with Kentucky State Police.
But she wasn't dead, the woman managed to call a neighbor, and police were called out to the home. When Breckinridge County Sheriff's and Kentucky State Police got to the home, the woman barely came to the door. Her throat was slit and she had several other wounds. Before being airlifted to the hospital, she told police her neighbor, Ernest Pine was the attacker.
Neighbors say the only thing they knew about Pine, was that he once lived in Elizabethtown, and California and that he was a former military man. The woman was a regular participant in homeowner association functions, and an avid church-goer, with a grandchild.
"I've only known her briefly this past year. I really got to know her this past year the most. But they're really good people," said Salmon.
Enest Pine is being held in the Breckinridge County jail and is charged with rape, sodomy, burglary and attempted murder. The victim is still in critical condition at University Hospital.
