U of L-UK game and Ironman competition could cause traffic nightmare

South Louisville residents are bracing for big crowds and crowded streets on Sunday.  About 40,000 fans heading to the U of L-UK football game may create traffic jams as they encounter streets closed because of another athletic event.

The annual Ironman Triathalon begins with an Ohio River swim and a bike race to LaGrange and back.  About the time fans are heading to Papa Johns Cardinal Stadium, the 23-- Ironman athletes will begin a foot race that will take four passes through the stadium area.

The triathalon athletes will be concentrating on their competition Sunday afternoon and evening.  To keep runners safe, the race route -- long stretches of Third and Fourth Streets and Southern Parkway -- will be closed, including areas around Papa Johns Cardinal Stadium.

Lt. Curtis Flaherty with Louisville Metro Police says, "That's the big concern on everybody's mind right now -- how we're going to get 38,000 people in and out of that game."

Police say football fans can avoid the closed streets by taking interstates and getting off to the east at Crittenden Drive, Preston Highway, and Phillips Lane.

Bill Renders fears the worst since past triathalons have left him with some bad traffic memories:  "And we pretty much had to go around quite a ways before we could cross west to east.  They pretty much blocked Fourth Street, so it's a problem."

Some football fans try to avoid game day congestion by taking the Watterson to the Taylor Blvd. exit and working their way back for parking. That's not going to work this year, since Third Street, Fourth Street, and Southern Parkway will be closed to through traffic.  And if you have a favorite, secret parking spot in the Churchill Downs area, that's not going to work either if it's west of Fourth.  That's where the closures begin."

Lt. Doug Sweeney with Louisville Metro Police says, "The Fairgrounds is always a great choice. Even though they are walking a little bit, it's not that far.  Just a few blocks."

Traffic officers believe football traffic and triathalon runners can coexist.  But South End residents predict taking away driving and parking options to the west and concentrating traffic to the east is a recipe for a big traffic headache.

One final note -- the Triathalon street closures will outlast the football game.  The street closings begin about noon Sunday and will continue until after midnight.
