Downtown traffic headaches at 6th Street and River Road

It was a frustrating morning for some workers downtown who ended up late for work because of traffic backups.  It's becoming a familiar problem but one with a different twist early Thursday.

"Sadly I was about ten minutes late, I'm usually very much on time," said Kama Korvela.

Korvela who works along Main Street tried several ways to get to work Thursday morning.  But no matter what road she took, U.S. 42, I-71 or River Road, traffic was backed up.

Many other motorists encountered the same probem.

When she arrived downtown she discovered that River Road at 6th Street was blocked once again.

"It was opened yesterday (Wednesday), I didn't have any problems, then today (Thursday) it was a completely different story, so I'm not sure what's going on," said Korvela.

For more than month crews have been installing utililites for the Museum Plaza development along this portion of River Road.  But after being closed for about a week earlier this summer, the road had re-opened with one lane during the morning rush.

"There was a different issue this morning (Thursday), there was the delivery of a couple of very large generators for the Ryder Cup festivities, that were coming in thru 6th Street, so it was closing the street this morning (Thursday)," said Kerri Richardson with the Mayor's office.

The city says the contractors have the right to close the road for the utility work at any time.  But the city is working with them to make sure at least one lane is open during the morning rush, at least to 4th Street.

"Ultimately we would prefer to have one lane open to 6th Street so they can get off there too, but for the next several months as we continue construction in this area there is always going to be some work going on in this area and motorists should be aware of that," said Richardson.
