Attorney General and BBB investigate local monument company

Losing a loved one and your money at the same time can be devastating.  But it's happened to some people in Kentuckiana.

Now, the Attorney General and Better Business Bureau are investigating a local monument company out of Elizabethtown.

Bluegrass Monuments promises to help create the perfect tribute to your loved one, but some of its customers say the company took their money and ran.

In January, Detrah Davis buried her mother.  "She died a week after I had my baby."

After the funeral, Davis ordered a headstone from Bluegrass Monuments in E-Town.  "It was a heart shaped headstone, with a angel holding a baby in the right corner.  I had her name on the front."

But the monument never came.  In July, Davis received a letter from the owner of the company, Kristy Crawford.

"Three days before my mother's 50th birthday, I received a letter saying my mother's headstone was in and I needed to pay the cemetery $300 to lay the foundation," said Davis.

The foundation was laid, but still no headstone.  "August 27th, I called again to see when it would be in and that's when I found out the number was disconnected," said Davis.

Fox 41 News went to Bluegrass Monuments and Kristy Crawford's E-town home, but the business is gone and so is she.

"She has taken money from a lot of customers," says Charlier Mattingly with the Better Business Bureau.

Mattingly says Bluegrass Monuments has an unsatisfactory rating and lots of unhappy customers.

The company's website is still up and running but, all of its phone numbers are disconnected.

"Now that the business appears gone, that means their money is probably gone," said Mattingly.

The business and her money may be gone, but Detrah Davis is not giving up.
