Human ashes discovered in Jeffersontown creekbed turned over to coroner's office

Five sets of human ashes found in a creekbed in Jeffersontown have now been turned over to the coroner's office.

The ashes were still sealed in plastic bags, and each was marked with a nametag.  They were in a blue plastic box in a creekbed along Watterson Trail.

Workers installing cable found the box.  Investigators say the remains are at least 20 years old.

The box also has a marking that says "Eastern" and a number.  Investigators say that may mean the ashes came from Eastern Cemetery in Louisville.

The cemetery and its former crematorium made news in the early 1990's with the discovery that many of the gravesites contained more than one person.

We were not able to contact current caretakers of the cemetery for comment.
