UPS sorting facility opens for packages delivered to Louisville, surrounding area

UPS has opened a new sorting facility to handle packages delivered to Louisville and the surrounding area.

The new UPS operation has created about 200 new jobs, and hundreds of others may soon follow.

It was back in 1969 that UPS began using Standiford Field for an experiment -- it would fly in packages, then move them to trucks for delivery.  It worked.

Nearly 40 years later, the trucking operation has moved off the airport property because UPS needs room to again expand its air delivery system.

UPS' Global Air Bub usually gets all the glory as planes come and go delivering packages all over the world.  But Friday it was all about the men and women who load and drive the famous brown trucks.

Larry Hayes with the Commerce Cabinet says, "You all enhance us every day that you get in those trucks and you move those packages and you double-park across town as you run up the street," to which the audience laughed.

The new ground package sorting hub is located just off the Outer Loop.  It can move up to 40,000 packages an hour, 10,000 more than the older facility it replaces.

The highly computerized system closely monitors operations to reduce parcel damage as packages move by conveyor to trucks for delivery throughout Kentucky and southern Indiana.

Metro Mayor Jerry Abramson says, "We're standing in the middle of what we call the Renaissance Zone, an area behind the airport we saw an as opportunity for growing business, and creating jobs, and attracting investment."

The mayor noted the UPS facility is the first business to open on land the city acquired years ago for future airport expansion.  The property just south of the airport is now expected to quickly grow into a new business center.  It may be expecially attractive to out-of-town companies who depend on UPS air delivery.

The new ground sorting hub makes it easier to deliver packages directly to UPS.  The facility includes a customer service building and drop-off boxes to accept packages.
