South Oldham Fire Department has new state-of-the-art firefighting equipment

The South Oldham Fire Department has new state-of-the-art equipment to fight fires.  It's thanks to a $160,000 grant from FEMA.

The fire department showed off its 25 new air packs during a demonstration Tuesday.  The grant also paid for new masks and laptop computers for the trucks.

The department says air packs have come a long way, and these are some of the best out there.

South Oldham Fire Dept. spokesman Kevin Parker explains, "We can now track firefighters in a building with a transmitter, which we could do back years ago....The other thing we can also do is, we can also bail out of buildings with these air packs, which we couldn't do before, as well in the event that a firefighters gets trapped.  And finally we can also, if we have a firefighter go down who's running out of air, we can quick fill his tank with an exsisting firefighter's tank."

The firefighters also received new masks that allow them to see when they are running low on air, and have speakers inside the masks to allow better communication.
