Indiana residents eager to get electricity

The news is slightly more optimistic for Hoosiers sitting in the dark.  At least 83,000 electric customers in southern Indiana are eager to get the power back.

Repairs are a bit easier because of the fewer numbers of people than Louisville.  But they're also a bit more difficult because the damage is so wide-spread.

Dave Barton and his electric crew have the answer for out-of-power Hoosiers they serve.  Their job is not a short-term fix-it.  But their customers may have a longer-term wait for the lights.

"We're saying anywhere from three days to the rest of the week," said Barton, the Clark REMC Operations Manager.

That's when Clark County REMC hopes to have its electric service restored.  Similar predictions come from the rest of the companies that power southern Indiana.

Crews surveyed lines along State Road Three north of Charlestown.  They have to look at every line for any problems.

"We worry about people trying to clean their own line out.  If they just can wait for us to get there and make it safe.  Then we're going to try to get the main lines on as quick as we can and then work on the smaller taps after that," said Barton.

With plenty of distance from power lines, family and friends cleared trees that fell on Janet Jenkins' property in Charlestown.  Dead and downed lines still rest on the ground across the street.  Jenkins expected a second night in the dark.

"We cooked what I had to cook and we made it through the say and night and we burned our candles," said Jenkins.

Firefighters and police planned extra patrols in the neighborhoods without power.

One issue involves some gasoline stations that have closed.  Some of them have run out of gas in part because the terminals that distribute gas are out of power as well.
