LG&E customers to see rate increase because of storm

The meter is still running on LG&E's storm repair cost total. But a state agency confirms LG&E customers can expect to pay much of the cost which will, certainly, be in the high millions.

The Kentucky Public Service Commission says utilities often seek rate increases to cover the costs of recovering from a major storm. LG&E has a contingency fund to help pay for storm repairs.

But the PSC's Andrew Melnykovych says that fund will not cover the total cost of this week's record setting storm.

"At some point on a future rate case, not the current rate case that is before the PSC for LG&E and Kentucky but in some future rate case, they will ask to recover all or some of those costs that were incurred during this event," said Melnkovych.

We're told the PSC usually allows a utility to cover only part of it's storm repair costs.

It typically spreads a storm related rate increase over several years to keep the monthly increase consumers pay as low as possible.
