Woman arrested after setting own house on fire

A surprising arrest tonight in a house fire investigators suspect was intentionally set. A woman is in custody is charged with burning down her own house.

It didn't take long for arson investigators to make an arrest in this case. It was a fire at Dixie Highway and Saint Louis Avenue that quickly got out of control. It was a fire that could have easily taken out the entire block. It spread from one house to the other in just a few short minutes in the 1300 block of Dixie Highway. Witnesses say before the flames shot through the roof there was a loud boom.

"We see the smoke. The lady is out there crying. She's like hysterical so we see the fire hit the other house. She had a lighter in her hand and all that," said Jamel Dunn, witness.

While firemen battled the blaze, arson investigators questioned this woman at the scene. She seemed distraught while answering questions. Investigators looked carefully at her hands while going over her story. After a few minutes, they took her into custody.

While the fire raged on, the occupants of both homes were moved to safety and no one was hurt.

Wednesday evening, after three hours of questioning, they arrested Diane Williamson who rented the house. She's charged with several counts of arson and wanton endangerment.

"Arson first covers the house itself, where the original scene took place. There was a gentleman upstairs on the second floor. She was an occupant of the second floor. The two counts of arson third, because the fire communicated to the houses on both sides," said Captain Jim Yates, Metro Arson.

Williamson was booked into metro corrections.

When asked about a motive, investigators said they had one, but could not elaborate.
