Woman dies in house fire after it was believed to be empty

Firefighters battling a southern Indiana house fire at first thought no one was home. But they found the body of 65-year old Donna Kirtley inside the house. It's on Luther Road near Paoli Pike in Floyds Knobs.

When the Lafayette Township Department arrived about 3:30 this morning, the home was engulfed in flames. Firefighters initially thought nobody was inside because there were no cars in the driveway. But neighbors told them a different story.

"We tried to get in just as soon as we could and due to heavy fire conditions we gained access, but then due to heavy fire conditions we had to back out," said Chief Jeremy Klein, Lafayette Township Fire Dept.

Chief Klein says the fire appears to have started in the front of the home in or around a sitting area.

The Indiana State Fire Marshal is investigating.
