Seneca HS Senior Redefines Time-Management

Meet Jah-nika Stevenson.  Singer, marksman, drill sergeant; all a part of her participation in Seneca High School's ROTC program, one of the nation's best.

Jah-nika says, "I came in the first day, thinking it was going to be a quiet class. And then, Sgt. Maj. started screaming and yelling and going crazy, and I was like, "Oh my gosh!", but I ended up liking it and staying with it."

Jah-nika does not come from a military family. She had no interest in it until her middle school counselor encouraged her to give ROTC a chance.

Jah-nika says the experience has changed her life.

"I don't come from a place where you have a lot of leadership," she says.  "It's kinda like you get in the background and follow. And, they gave me the opportunity to lead, and if you have an opportunity, you just take it."

Jah-nika was named commanding officer for her senior year. It's a great honor that comes with lots of responsibility.  That begins most mornings at 5:30.

"Usually, I have drill or rifle practice in the morning. Then, I have first period ROTC for seniors. Then, I have second period ROTC for the freshmen, because I teach them as well. And, after school, we usually have PT practice or rifle practice, depending. So most of the day I'm in ROTC."

And, did we mention she plays varsity basketball, too.

Jah-nika says, "So, I run from PT practice from 2:30-3:30. Then I run over to basketball practice from 3:30 to 5:30. Well, actually I have a nighttime job, so at around six or seven, I go to work."

Homework is done when she gets a break at Wendy's. So, Jah-nika doesn't really know what it's like to take a break.

And she won't find out when she graduates next spring. She plans to enlist in the Marines and march toward a pilot's license and her goal of becoming a foreign language specialist.

"ROTC changes your whole perspective on life," Jah-nika says.  "It just makes you a better person in general."

Her aim is success and with her determination, her result is sure to be a bullseye.
