David Williams - Irrational Obstructionist (11/13/08)
We can argue over blame and dispute exact figures. But its clear the money Kentucky currently generates through taxes and other revenues doesn't come close to matching what's required to provide even the most basic services - like education and road maintenance.
State Senator David Williams claims any pleas to help fix the problem are just the paranoid wails of a Democratic administration that doesn't know how to budget.
But denying a problem exists doesn't make it so.
This problem transcends political affiliations. It's the natural result of both parties selling themselves to Kentucky voters for decades on the easy and empty promise of "something for nothing." And now, the house of cards we've been constructing all these years is finally collapsing.
Senator Williams opposes logical revenue-producing options - like legalizing casino gambling or upping the cigarette tax - and that's just a pure abdication of responsibility.
If David Williams is so convinced of the virtue of his obstructionism, then let's see him look his constituents in the eye and tell them exactly which state services they'll have to do without in the future in order to accommodate his irrational fiscal policy.
It's quite possible he'll say "nothing." But if that's the case, believe him at your own peril.
I'm Bill Lamb, and that's my...Point of View.
