Geek Squad's Tips for Protecting Against a Common Worm

Over the last three months there's been a computer virus going by two aliases: Confickr and Downadup.

This worm is wrecking havoc on the world's PCs noted by computer security software manufactures who are tallying up Confickr's infection rates, which include:

  • Panda Security is reporting that the Confickr worm has infected about one-sixth of the world's PC population.
  • Automated security specialist Shavlik Technologies is estimating that the infection is growing at the rate of 1 million computers a day.
  • Security vendor F-Secure believes Confickr has infected close to 9 million PCs.

Geek Squad Agents have seen this worm reappear over the last few months and want to ensure that all PCs are protected or if your system is infected, it's brought back to full health.

Confick infects a Windows system and creates a hidden web server that allows it to spread the infection to other computers.

Machines that have not been properly updated with the latest Microsoft Windows updates are susceptible to the worm. The worm can also infect a PC through an external storage device.

How to protect PC's from Confickr by following these steps:

  • Keep your operating system up to date.
  • Run updates for anti-virus and anti-spyware protection.
  • Use either a software or hardware firewall.
