JCPS middle, high school choices due soon

Jefferson County public schools parents are learning more about the proposed changes to the district's middle and high school student assignment plan for the 2010-11 school year.

The school district wants to make sure everyone's "on the right page," and parents, students and administrators understand the importance of what could happen.

Parents like Marion Gee say her daughter's future is at stake.

"I'm just very concerned she gets a good middle school," Gee said.

The school district says the changes in the plan will bring further diversity to the schools, which serve grades 6-12.

"We attempted to create what we consider a very exemplary model of integration, with slightly moving boundaries and shifting school assignments.  We think we have actually created a stronger model and stronger program educationally," JCPS superintendent Sheldon Berman said.

The school district is divided into different regions, or "clusters."  Parents and students also have options to choose magnet schools not necessarily in their neighborhoods.

Look for further meetings at 7 p.m. Thursday at Eastern High School; Feb. 24 at Western Middle School; and Feb. 26 at Western High School.

Further explanations are available through the Jefferson County Public Schools web site at www.jefferson.k12.ky.us and through local schools.
