Kentuckiana family paying it forward with a blood drive

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The American Red Cross is seeing a summer slowdown in donations.

To deal with the critical need of blood and platelet donors, they are offering incentives including gift cards and drawings for trips.

Blood donors will be entered to win a trip to either Cedar Point or Knott's Berry Farm. There is also an emergency need for new platelet donors.

Those who donate platelets now through August 31 will be given a $5 e-gift certificate for places like Target or Amazon. Previous platelets donors will be given $25 Home Depot gift cards if they donate again.

Blood shortages could lead to delays in patient care and cancer treatments. The Red Cross mad an emergency appeal for donor of all blood types in July, which resulted in a 30 percent increase in donation appointments.  But more donations are need to meet patient needs and to replenish the blood supply.

Blood drives are held all over the area.  To find the nearest one to you, CLICK HERE
