LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A 19-year-old man was arrested Wednesday morning after shooting two LMPD officers in the city's Smoketown neighborhood.
Jeremiah Thompson was taken into custody shortly after 1 a.m. and is being charged with assault of a police officer, wanton endangerment, and receiving stolen property.
Thompson had his arm in a sling, when he pleaded not guilty at his arraignment on Thursday.
The shooting occurred Tuesday night around 8 p.m. after officers from the department's Fourth Division made a stop of a person in the 400 block of Roselane Street, according to LMPD Deputy Chief Col. Emily McKinley.
In the arrest report, it says Thompson was standing outside next to a grey 2018 Kia Soul, when officers first arrived to the location. The report says Thompson admitted to officers that he had been driving the car, which was reported stolen on Nov. 18.
Officers then attempted to detain Thompson, where he resisted and two officers were shot while trying to gain control of his hands, according to the citation.
One officer was shot in the right hand and "caused serious physical injury requiring surgery," and the other officer was shot in the left leg. LMPD said both are now home recovering.
A third officer was also involved in the struggle with Thompson, but was not injured.
Thompson was shot in the torso and the right arm, according to the arrest report. According to the citation, "... the subject discharged a round ..."
LMPD said no officers fired their guns.
LMPD's Public Integrity Unit is handling the investigation.
In court Thursday, Thompson's attorney John Olash pushed to get video played that he says disproves what's in the complaint.
"When they couldn't get to his hands, one of the police officers pulled out an extendable billy club and jabbed that into my client's side. When he jabbed that into my client's side, that's when you hear a pop and that's when the shot goes off," Olash told the judge.
The judge kept Thompson's bond at $100,000. He's due back in court December 3.
"I'm not going to watch a video," said the judge. "The facts, obviously the county and you disagree with what the facts are and that'll be parsed out at the probable cause hearing. That's the appropriate time for all of that to come out."
LMPD said body camera video would be released around the first week of December.
Anyone with information on the investigation, or anyone who has video that may be related to the incident, is asked to call LMPD's anonymous Crime Tip Line at (502) 574-LMPD (5673). Tips can also be submitted anonymously online through the department's Crime Tip Portal by clicking here.
