Police investigating fatal shooting near Fern Creek

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) – Authorities have identified a man who was found shot at an apartment complex in the Fern Creek neighborhood Monday afternoon.

According to the Jefferson County Coroner's office, that man has been identified as 21-year-old Gregory Norris Jr.

It happened at an apartment complex in the 5300 block of Hames Trace at about 1:30 p.m. on Monday, near the intersection of South Hurstbourne Parkway and Bardstown Road. Norris was a resident of the complex, according to the coroner's office.

Police say the shooting took place in a building in the common area. Nakota Powell, 19, said he heard the shooting right after taking his dogs back inside his nearby apartment.

"All I heard was, 'Boom! Boom! Boom! Boom!'" Powell said. "I thought it was firecrackers."

Powell said he immediately ran out the door and found the man gasping for air. He said other neighbors came out to help and called 911.

"It surprised me," he said. "I didn't think someone would kill someone in the hallway of an apartment right outside my doorstep."

When officers arrived, they found Norris who had been shot several times. He was pronounced dead a short time later. The coroner's office lists his official cause of death as "multiple gunshot wounds, homicide."

Police say they have no suspects at this point, but Powell said multiple people saw the killer run outside the building and is confident LMPD will find the shooter.

In addition to the police officers on the ground, there were K-9s, and the police helicopter could be seen circling for hours.

Javier Wilson, a man on the scene, said his mom works at the building.

"She said that she saw the police car just driving by looking for the guy, but that’s all she really told me," he said. "I just worry about her safety and stuff and just knowing that people are coming in this neighborhood and doing this kind of stuff."

The LMPD Homicide Unit is investigating.

Police say they have no suspects at this time, and anyone with information is asked to call the LMPD crime tip line at 574-LMPD. Callers can remain anonymous.
