Bond set at $50K for man accused of dumping girlfriend's body in trash

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Louisville man accused of dumping his girlfriend's body in a curbside trash can last week was in court Monday.

Police say 59-year-old George Stokes has admitted dumping the woman's body, but says he didn't kill her. The woman, who has not been identified, was found in a sanitation truck after crews emptied garbage cans on Phyllis Avenue near Arcade Avenue on July 27 and saw the body.

Police have not said how the woman died.

Stokes was arrested July 28. Investigators say he admitted to finding the woman unresponsive inside his apartment. That's when police say he placed her body in a trash can and moved it to the curb for weekly pickup.

In court Monday, Stokes pleaded not guilty to tampering with physical evidence and abuse of a corpse. Noting that he already has a non-compliance warrant, the judge set his bond at $50,000.

Stokes was ordered to have no contact with the victim's family. His next court date was scheduled for Aug. 9.
