Father of Indiana man charged with rape, molestation says son has mind of 1st grader

JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. (WDRB) -- A southern Indiana man arrested earlier this week for felony rape and child molestation was in court Friday.

The Clark County Sheriff's Office arrested 22-year-old Lewis Craig of Otisco on Thursday.

Detectives say they started investigating after they received two separate rape complaints from juveniles against Craig. During the investigation, a third victim was discovered.

Police say that victim was an adult.

Craig voluntarily spoke with detectives on Thursday.

On Friday, Craig's father, Frank Craig, spoke outside the courtroom where his son was arraigned.

"He's special needs," Craig said. "He was all through school. He tested out of high school at 20 years old at a first grade level. And all this crap is exactly that: crap. Nothing to it."

As Craig was escorted into court Friday, he told reporters that asked if he had sex with the teens: "no."

Investigators say a 13-year-old girl and 16-year-old girl both came forward separately, detailing a violent sexual encounter with Lewis Craig. During those interviews, Noel said they found out about a third victim. Police say that victim, who is 18, was in some kind of relationship with Craig.

The sheriff's office released few details on Friday, saying only that Craig "lured and groomed" the teens before assaulting them.

"This case is extremely concerning to me because of what happened, what these victims went through," said Clark County Sheriff Jamey Noel at a news conference Friday morning. "And although suspects are always innocent until proven guilty, this case is absolutely appalling, what I've seen so far."

Craig is due back in court next week. His bond was set at $100,000.
