LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Grayson County Middle School teacher is facing charges after he allegedly engaged in a sexual activity with a student.
According to a news release from the Leitchfield Police Department, 65-year-old John W. Cariel of Leitchfield, Kentucky, has been charged with distribution of obscene matter to a minor, first-degree sexual abuse, second-degree sodomy and engaging in the prohibited use of an electronic communications system to procure a minor or peace officer for sexual offenses.
Police say the incidents leading up to the charges occurred in October of 2017.
An arrest report outlines the details of the alleged crime.
WARNING: The following material is graphic.
The arrest report reads as follows:
"On 5/11/18, this officer received a report of allegations concerning a sexual encounter between the above offender and a juvenile under the age of 14. Through investigation, it was found that the offender was employed at Grayson County Middle School as a 6th grade teacher and the victim was known to be a student at the same school at the time of the offense. It was found that the offender made initial contact with the victim via a social media like application using his cellular device. It was found that the offender sent photographs of his exposed genitalia to the juvenile victim via this application. It was further found that a physical sexual act was performed in the parking lot of Major's Trucking in Caneyville, KY (North Main Street area) around October of 2017. The offender exposed his genitalia to the victim, then allowed the juvenile victim to perform oral sex on him. After oral sex was performed, the juvenile was exposed to the offender as the offender knowingly masturbated in the presence of the juvenile victim.
The offender was interviewed at Leitchfield Police Department on 5/15/2018 where he was mirandized and waived his rights. The offender admitted to each of the above allegations."
He is currently being held in the Grayson County Detention Center.
Police say the victim was not one of Cariel's students, and has since moved and is no longer a part of the Grayson County school district. A spokesman declined to elaborate on whether the victim was a male or female.
Shortly after the incident became public, Grayson County Schools Superintendent Doug Robinson issued the following statement:
"A student tip to a School Resource Officer alleging inappropriate student contact has led to the arrest of Grayson County Middle School teacher, John Cariel. The alleged contact took place through technology in the fall of 2017 and off school premises.
I am sickened and dismayed. Teachers are placed in a position of extreme trust. Students and their families should always have confidence in that. We realize that trust within our own system has now been broken due to the actions of a few.
Grayson County Schools will not tolerate even a suggestion of improper behavior or contact between teachers and students. Any allegations will be handed over immediately to law enforcement for investigation. If verified they will lead to arrest, prosecution and termination from both the district and the Education Professional Standards Board to ensure these individuals can never again work with children."
