POLICE: Jeffersontown dad arrested after 4-year-old locked out of home

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Jeffersontown man was arrested Monday after police say a 4-year-old boy was found screaming and crying, locked out of his house.

According to an arrest report, the incident took place at about 9:30 p.m. on June 4 at a home in the 3100 block of Auburn Circle, near Jeffersontown High School.

Police say they were sent to that home after someone reported that the screaming child was locked out of his home. When officers arrived, they allegedly found the boy outside at his next door neighbor's house.

Police say they tried several times to get someone to answer the door at the boy's home, but were unsuccessful. According to the arrest report, police then looked through the window and saw a 3-year-old in the home.

Authorities then forced their way into the home to check on the child. That's when they allegedly found the father of the two children, 35-year-old William Gilkey, lying on the floor of the basement.

Gilkey allegedly told officers that he had been sleeping and didn't hear them when they were knocking on the door. Police say he also told them that he thought the 4-year-old had been watching television.

According to the arrest report, he admitted to smoking marijuana, but denied using any other drugs.

Police say Gilkey was the only adult in the home, and that his negligence "created a substantial danger of physical injury or worse to the children."

Child Protective Services was notified, and Gilkey was arrested and charged with endangering the welfare of a minor and second-degree wanton endangerment.
