Tenants of murdered landlord say he may have been to blame

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Joshua Young, age 21, is being held at Metro Corrections on a $250,000 bond.

Meanwhile, some of his neighbors said he was defending himself and shouldn't be in jail.

"He would come over and say, 'You better have my rent,'" a tenant remembered. "He said he would come over with his goons and smash my head if I didn't get out. When he came around, I was very scared."

That's what a woman said she'll remember most about her landlord, 43-year-old Shane McCain. McCain was shot several times in the Portland neighborhood Monday afternoon and was later pronounced dead at University Hospital.

Police said 21-year-old Joshua Young pulled the trigger after a fight over rent.

"No one should be shot to death, I know, but I believe he was defending himself," the tenant said.

Wanting to remain anonymous, the woman said McCain is anything but a victim.

"He was just out of control."

She said he was a "slumlord" who left messages on her door and threatened to kill her and other tenants over rent.

"I was looking out my window when the tenant upstairs, he was late on his rent, and he snatched him out of the doorway and proceeded to physically attack him on the sidewalk," she explained. "It's just scary when someone comes and threatens your physical well-being in your own home."

But some tenants see McCain in a completely different light. One man we spoke with didn't want to show his face, but said McCain was a stand-up guy who was just handling his business.

"He's the landlord. If you owe somebody their money, just give them their money," he said.

Young pleaded not guilty to murder, attempted murder and evidence tampering charges. He's also facing a fugitive warrant in Indiana for a weapons charge.

His fellow tenant is asking that the court to be lenient with his case.

"I have no doubt, even though I wasn't there, he was trying to protect himself and his family," she said.

Young's next court date is scheduled for May 27.
