LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A longtime principal who led his school through a turnaround has been named an assistant superintendent for Jefferson County Public Schools.
Brad Weston will begin his new role overseeing academics at nearly 30 of the district's schools as soon as his replacement at Fairdale is named. He replaces Amy Dennes, who retired from the district in August.
Weston joins five other assistant superintendents -- Glenn Baete, Paige Hartstern, Katy Zeitz, Joe Leffert and Michelle Dillard. Each assistant superintendent is responsible for a region of schools.
"I'm excited by the opportunity to positively impact several thousand students and several hundred teachers in 28 schools," Weston told WDRB on Wednesday. District officials could not immediately confirm his start date.
Superintendent Donna Hargens said Weston led Fairdale through a dramatic academic turnaround during his tenure, including improving statewide assessment scores and adopting the Cambridge International Studies program.
"Brad has a proven track record of improving student achievement, and he spent many years as a teacher in the classroom and as a principal," said Hargens said. "His experience will be invaluable as we look to increase student achievement across Area 2."
The schools Weston will oversee in Region 2 include Academy @ Shawnee, Doss, duPont Manual, Fairdale and Iroquois High Schools; Lassiter, Noe, Olmsted Academy North and Olmsted Academy South Middle Schools, the ESL Newcomer Academy; and Auburndale, Byck, Cochran, Coral Ridge, Engelhard, Fairdale, Foster, Frayser, Gutermuth, Hazelwood, Jacob, Kenwood, McFerran, Minors Lane, Rutherford, Semple, Stonestreet, Trunnell and Young Elementary Schools.
He's worked for JCPS for 24 years, starting as a math teacher at Doss High School.
He's been at Fairdale High for the past 22 years as a teacher, assistant principal, counselor and as principal for the past five years.
The search for a new principal for Fairdale High will begin immediately.
