Father apologizes to public after 7-year-old Japanese boy abandoned in forest

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A seven-year-old Japanese boy has been found days after his parents abandoned him in a forest.

Japanese officials say Yamato Tanooka's parents left him alone for a short time on Saturday as a punishment for bad behavior.

The Japan Times reports the boy was found this morning in a small building at a military exercise ground two-and-a-half miles from where he was left. Japanese media says the parents identified Yamato as their son.

"My excessive behavior forced my son to experience a very painful time and I deeply apologize to people at his school, people in search operation and everybody for causing them such trouble," said Takayuki Tanooka -- Yamato's father -- through a translator.

He's said to be in good health and was taken to the hospital for a check-up.
